Lost in the Magic of Colombia: A 10-Day Adventure
Just returned from the most incredible journey through Colombia, and I’m still processing everything I experienced. Here’s my attempt to capture the wild beauty of this country that completely stole my heart.
Day 1-3: Cartagena – Colonial Dreams and Caribbean Vibes
Landed in Cartagena feeling like I’d stepped into a Gabriel García Márquez novel. The old city’s cobblestone streets and pastel-colored colonial buildings practically glowed in the golden hour light. Spent my first morning getting gloriously lost in the maze-like streets, discovering hidden plazas where locals played dominoes under ancient trees.
The highlight? Climbing the city walls at sunset with a cold Club Colombia in hand, watching the Caribbean Sea turn every shade of orange and pink imaginable. Street vendors selling fresh mango with chili powder became my new obsession.
Pro tip: Skip the touristy restaurants in the old town and head to Getsemaní for authentic arepas and the most welcoming locals you’ll ever meet.
Day 4-6: The Amazon – Into the Green Heart
Nothing prepares you for the Amazon. Nothing. The flight from Cartagena to Leticia felt like traveling to another planet. The jungle extends endlessly in every direction, a sea of green that makes you feel simultaneously insignificant and deeply connected to something ancient.
Stayed in a rustic eco-lodge accessible only by canoe. My guide, Carlos, had grown up in these waters and knew every bird call, every medicinal plant, every hidden tributary. We spotted pink dolphins on day two – these mystical creatures appearing and disappearing like river spirits.
The nights were my favorite part. Lying in a hammock while the jungle symphony played around me: howler monkeys, exotic birds, and sounds I couldn’t identify but somehow felt familiar. The stars here are different, brighter, like someone turned up the cosmic volume.
Unforgettable moment: Watching a family of sloths move in impossibly slow motion just meters above our heads while electric blue morpho butterflies danced around us.
Day 7-8: Medellín – The City of Eternal Spring
Medellín blew my mind. This city has completely transformed itself and radiates creative energy from every corner. The metro system is a work of art, and the cable cars offer breathtaking views of the valley below.
Spent hours in Comuna 13, learning about its remarkable transformation from one of the world’s most dangerous neighborhoods to a vibrant community showcasing incredible street art. The outdoor escalators here aren’t just transportation – they’re symbols of hope and progress.
The food scene is unreal. Found myself at a tiny family-run restaurant in El Poblado where the owner’s grandmother made the best bandeja paisa I’ve ever tasted. The portion was massive, the flavors were complex, and the warmth of the people made it unforgettable.
Cultural highlight: Caught a salsa performance in Plaza Botero surrounded by Fernando Botero’s voluptuous sculptures under the stars.
Day 9-10: Cocora Valley – Walking Among the Clouds
Saved the best for last. The Cocora Valley in the coffee region is pure magic. These towering wax palms – Colombia’s national tree – stretch impossibly high into the misty sky like something from a fairy tale.
The hike through the cloud forest was challenging but absolutely worth it. As we climbed higher, the landscape shifted from lush green valleys to ethereal cloud forests where everything was draped in moss and mystery. The silence up there was profound, broken only by the distant calls of exotic birds.
Ended the trip with a traditional coffee farm tour, learning about the entire process from bean to cup. The coffee here isn’t just a drink – it’s a way of life, a source of pride, and honestly, the best I’ve ever tasted.
Final Thoughts
Colombia is a country that defies every expectation. It’s raw and refined, ancient and modern, challenging and welcoming all at once. The people possess a warmth and resilience that’s infectious, and the natural beauty is simply staggering.
I came here looking for adventure and found something much deeper – a country that reminded me why I fell in love with travel in the first place. Colombia doesn’t just show you incredible sights; it changes how you see the world.
Already planning my return. This time, I’m thinking about exploring the Pacific coast and maybe attempting to hike to Ciudad Perdida. Colombia has officially become my favorite South American destination.
¡Hasta la vista, hermosa Colombia!
